Public Health and Human Services Committee

The Public Health and Human Services Committee of Spartanburg County Council met on Monday, May 15, 2000, in Conference Room Two of the County Administrative Office Building. The following were in attendance: Honorable Johnnye Code Stewart, Chair; Honorables Ken Huckaby and Jeff Horton, Committee members; along with the Honorables Karen Floyd, Frank Nutt, Rock Adams, and David Britt, Council Members. Also in attendance were Mr. James Hartmann, County Administrator; Mr. Bill Dennis, Deputy County Administrator; Mr. Glenn Breed, Assistant County Administrator; and Edwin Haskell, Assistant County Attorney.
In compliance with the Freedom of Information Act, notice of this meeting was provided in advance to the local news media and other interested parties.
Chairman Stewart called the meeting to order.
- Mr. Marvin Sanders of the Veterans Affairs Office appeared relative to commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War. Mr. Sanders requested that Council adopt a resolution proclaiming June 26th as Korean War Veterans Day in Spartanburg County. He also requested that Council contribute $500 for the purchase of ball caps and flags. Motion by Mr. Huckaby to recommend to full Council that a Resolution be prepared for adoption at the June meeting, which will proclaim June 26th as Korean War Veterans Day in Spartanburg County, and an expenditure be approved from Council contingency in the amount of $500 to purchase ball caps and flags. Motion seconded by Mr. Horton and carried.
- Marsha Deal, Special Olympics Coordinator, appeared regarding Spartanburg Athletes attending the World Winter Special Olympics in Anchorage, Alaska. Ms. Deal stated that the athletes have worked very hard, and represent a very special population in this County. The staff that works with the children is not paid. Special Olympics is requesting $4,000 from County Council to assist with air fare for the athletes, as well as spending money and winter clothing. Motion by Mr. Horton to carry this item over pending receipt of further detailed information. There was no second and the motion died. Motion by Mr. Huckaby to recommend to full Council an expenditure of $4,000 from video poker funds to assist the Special Olympics Athletes attend the World Winter Special Olympics in Anchorage, Alaska. Motion seconded by Ms. Stewart and carried.
