Recreation Committee
April 17, 2000
The Recreation Committee of Spartanburg County Council met on Monday, April 17, 2000, in Conference Room Two of the County Administrative Office Building. The following were in attendance: Honorable Jeff Horton, Chair; Honorables Johnnye Code Stewart and Rock Adams, Committee members; along with the Honorables Karen Floyd, Frank Nutt, David Britt, and Ken Huckaby, Council Members. Also in attendance were Mr. James Hartmann, County Administrator; Mr. Bill Dennis, Deputy County Administrator; Mr. Glenn Breed, Assistant County Administrator; and Roy McBee Smith, County Attorney.
In compliance with the Freedom of Information Act, notice of this meeting was provided in advance to the local news media and other interested parties.
Chairman Horton called the meeting to order.
- Mr. Jeff Caton appeared to give an update on the Cleveland Park Renovation Project. He stated that modifications are being made to the plans that might reduce the proposed cost. The Fund Raising Committee is continuing its work. Stop the Violence has met with the neighbors regarding the proposed relocation of basketball courts. The basketball subcommittee will meet and coordinate with Mr. Caton.
- Mr. Jeff Caton appeared regarding the USCS Soccer Complex. According to the Facilities Director at USCS, the volunteers are slated to begin work on the fields within the next few days. The grading on three fields should be complete at the end of two weeks, at which time grass will be planted.
- Mr. Jeff Caton provided information relative to RFPs received for architectural design for regional parks. Mr. Caton stated that the Committee has met and reviewed the RFPs received. Two firms rated closely; the two most highly qualified firms were the most costly. The Committee recommends the proposal submitted by Wood and Partners at a cost of $70,000. Motion by Ms. Stewart to authorize the County Administrator to enter into a contract with Wood and Partners at a cost of $70,000 for regional park design. Motion seconded by Mr. Adams and carried.
