A Spartanburg man received a 15-year prison sentence today after he admitted to the armed hold-up of a city business. Jermaine Brewton, 23, of 326 Hillandale Road, pleaded guilty to armed robbery before Circuit Judge John Few. Brewton robbed the NC Fresh Market, 486 Magnolia St., on July 15, 2002. Brewton entered the business about 1:25 p.m. and came around the counter. He grabbed the clerk around her throat and made her open the cash register. Brewton grabbed a sum of money and fled from the business on foot toward Howard Street. Brewton never showed a gun but he told the clerk he would shoot her if she didn’t cooperate. The clerk told the responding police officers the suspect was the same person who robbed the business five days earlier. Police used the victim’s description and surveillance video to identify Brewton as the suspect. Spartanburg Public Safety officers arrested Brewton minutes after they confronted him at a Ridge Street home. Brewton will serve 85 percent of the sentence before he is eligible for release. |
