SPARTANBURG MAN RECEIVES 30-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE FOR CHILD MOLESTATION CONVICTION

A Spartanburg man received a 30-year prison sentence today after a jury found him guilty of repeatedly sexually assaulting a minor.

At the end of a four-day trial, Farid Mangal, 49, was convicted of one count of Criminal Sexual Conduct in the First Degree, two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct in the Second Degree, one count of Lewd Act on a Minor, and one count of Incest.

The victim reported the sexual abuse to investigators with the Spartanburg Public Safety Departmen. According to testimony presented at trial, the victim was 10 years old when the sexual assaults began. They continued over a 6- year period.

Assistant Solicitor Cindy Crick, Assistant Solicitor Tony Leibert, and Principal Deputy Solicitor Barry Barnette presented evidence through the victim and members of her family. A forensic examiner and a medical doctor from the Children’s Advocacy Center also testified concerning the sexual assaults suffered by the victim.

A Family Court proceeding two years earlier also found evidence of sexual abuse in this case.

Mangal will serve 85 percent of his prison sentence before he is eligible for release. His name will be added to the Sex Offender Registry, which requires GSP monitoring upon his release.
