SOLCITOR GOWDY RETAINS CHAIRMANSHIP OF PROSECUTION COMMISSION

Seventh Judicial Circuit Solicitor Trey Gowdy has been re-elected chairman of the South Carolina Commission on Prosecution Coordination.

The veteran solicitor for Spartanburg and Cherokee counties was re-elected to a two-year terms at a recent statewide meeting of prosecutors. The commission coordinates the administrative functions of the state’s 16 solicitor’s offices. The commission’s work includes budgets, developing a legal education for prosecutors and legislative representation in the General Assembly. Gowdy is a leader in the fight for stronger DUI and domestic violence laws. He has also pointed out problems with Jessica’s Law.

Gowdy is one of five solicitors on the commission. The group includes high-ranking legislators and statewide law enforcement leaders. Gov. Mark Sanford appointed Gowdy to the commission in 2003.

“Solicitor Gowdy is a dynamic consensus builder,” said William Bilton, executive director of the Commission of Prosecution Coordination. “He knows how to bring people together and that is what you want and need in a chairman. This is particularly important during difficult economic times.”
