GAFFNEY MAN RECEIVES 12-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE FOR VIOLENT ASSAULT A Gaffney man is going to prison for more than a decade after a Cherokee County jury determined that he used a walking stick to violently assault someone. Donald Scott Jones, 40, was found guilty of assault and battery with intent to kill late Tuesday. Circuit Judge Mark Hayes issued a 20-year prison sentence that was suspended to 12 years of service and 5 years probation. Jones assaulted Jerry Wayne Emery of Blacksburg on May 27, 2006 at a Hill Street home. Jones used the walking stick to hit the victim on his arm and head. Emery was treated at Upstate Carolina Medical Center for a head laceration and a fractured arm. Police arrested Jones during a traffic stop a short time after the crime was reported, according to Assistant Solicitor Kim Leskanic. Jones is awaiting trial on assault and battery with intent to kill and first-degree criminal sexual conduct charges in connection to an incident that occurred in May. Leskanic said Jones will be returned to Cherokee County to stand trial on the recent charges at a date to be determined soon. For more information, contact Murray Glenn at 809-4892. |
