CONVICTED MURDERER RECEIVES 3-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE FOR JAIL ATTACK

A convicted murderer received a 3-year prison sentence today after he was found guilty of attacking a detention officer at the Spartanburg County jail.

Jonathan C. Vick, 31, was found guilty of threatening the life of a public official and assault on a correctional officer during a two-day jury trial.

The crime occurred April 30, 2006 while Vick was incarcerated at the county jail awaiting trial on murder, kidnapping and sexual assault charges. Detention officers said Vick draped his feet out food hatch of his cell door and he became belligerent when asked to comply with the jail regulations. When officers opened the door, Vick continued his aggressive behavior. He made verbal threats and lunged at an officer who sprayed him with a quick burst of pepper spray. Back-up officers helped the initial officers contain the inmate.

Principal Deputy Solicitor Barry Barnette used the testimony of the primary detention officer, Corporal Alvin Jennings, to present his case. Barnette used a video of the incident to further strengthen the case. Vick testified as well.

Months after the assault, Vick was found guilty of the murder, kidnapping and sexual assault of Dana Satterfield in her Roebuck beauty saloon and he received a life prison sentence that carried a parole eligibility date of Oct. 24, 2035. Vick’s parole eligibility will be affected by the new conviction. He will start serving the new prison sentence once he completes service on the older case.

“Jonathan Vick is a danger to our community and he doesn’t deserve to ever see the light of day,” Barnette said. “He needs to spend the rest of his life behind bars.”
