Power Off More Than 180 Days

Please make sure to “pre-inspect” the property to help ensure that the structure meets minimum habitability requirements. A failed inspection will cause a denial of the release of power. You will not be able to get your power turned on until after corrections are made and a re-inspection is scheduled and approved.

For single family dwellings and mobile homes the inspector will need access to the inside of the home. The following will be inspected:

  • All existing lights, receptacles and switches are in place with proper covers
  • There is no hazardous existing wiring or improper grounding/bonding
  • All wire ends must be capped (wire nuts) and properly terminated in boxes. No exposed wiring in the residence allowed.
  • Service cables shall be in good condition, properly secured and sealed at the entry of cabinets.
  • All services and electric systems shall have an approved grounding system. Typically this this is two ground rods with a continuous grounding wire (#4 copper)
  •  Smoke detectors shall be installed in bedrooms and the immediate vicinity outside of bedrooms (Battery operated detectors are acceptable if wired detectors cannot be installed)
  • Required , landings, handrails/guardrails at exit doors shall be in place and in safe condition
  • An approved heat source shall be in place
  • Underpinning (mobile homes) shall be in place
  • No broken windows or broken glass in doors
  • Dwelling has an operable bathroom and kitchen

For commercial properties the inspector will need access to the inside of the building. The following will be inspected:

  •  All existing lights, receptacles and switches are in place with proper covers
  • There is no hazardous existing wiring or improper grounding/bonding
  • All wire ends must be capped (wire nuts) and properly terminated in boxes. No exposed wiring in the building allowed.
  • Service cables shall be in good condition, properly secured and sealed at the entry of cabinets.
  • All services and electric systems shall have an approved grounding system. Typically this this is two ground rods with a continuous grounding wire (#4 copper)
  • Exit and emergency lighting is in place
  • Egress paths are marked and clear
  • Fire extinguishers are in place
  • Required , landings, handrails/guardrails at exit doors shall be in place and in safe condition
  • Structure has an operable bathroom

By submitting this permit for power reconnection, the applicant acknowledges the following: 

  • That no other renovation or construction work will be performed at the address without being issued the proper permits. 
  • If the inspection results in the need for further electrical repair work to be performed in order to have the power reconnected, a licensed electrician will be required to obtain an electrical permit from Spartanburg County to complete such repairs.
