A BMW supplier that recently opened in Spartanburg County is already planning to expand.
Magna Seating at Tyger Industrial Park North has asked the county for $120,000 in additional infrastructure credits for an $8 million expansion that would create 130 full-time jobs. The revised fee-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement would grant Magna a total of $810,000 in special source revenue credits through 2020, with a total planned investment of $37 million and the creation of 610 jobs.
Spartanburg County Council approved the first reading of the amended tax agreement with the Canadian company on Monday. A second reading and public hearing is scheduled for March 19, with the third and final reading planned for April 16.
“Magna’s growth is a great example of their confidence in Spartanburg County and our delivering on our promises in the initial selling phase of the project,” Councilman David Britt, chairman of the economic development committee, said in an email. “It’s also a testament to BMW’s continuing ripple effect on our county and their value as our partner to generate unbounded hope and opportunity for all of our Spartanburg citizens, both young and old.”
Magna Seating, a division of Magna International in Aurora, Ontario, broke ground on a 230,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in December 2016, and opened in December 2017 with a ceremonial flag-raising event.
The Moore facility manufactures seats for BMW’s X models that are produced at the German automaker’s Greer plant.
It became Magna’s fourth facility in South Carolina. The company produces automobile parts such as the body, chassis, exterior, seating, power-train, electronic, vision, closure and roof systems and modules.
Magna spokesman Scott Worden said in an email that a grand opening event at the facility is planned for March 26.
Founded in 1957, Magna has 328 manufacturing operations worldwide and 99 product development, engineering and sales centers in 29 countries with more than 163,000 employees.
