GoUpstate: Chinese manufacturer to build Spartanburg County plant

New Manufacturer Coming to Spartanburg County

From staff reports, Spartanburg Herald Journal

A BMW supplier from China will break ground Tuesday on a new production plant in Spartanburg County.
Jiangnan Mold Plastic Technology Corp. announced Monday it will invest $45 million to build a 260,000-square-foot facility on nearly 13 acres at the intersection of Robinson and Genoble roads near Greer and create 150 jobs during the next five years.

The company said the plant will produce a range of parts for the automotive industry. It will begin hiring and start operations during the second half of 2017.

“This investment in South Carolina and Spartanburg County will further strengthen Jiangnan’s effort to expand its global leadership role in the plastic molding industry,” said Robert Cao, chairman and general manager of Jiangnan, in a statement. “It is very clear to us that South Carolina is a pro-business state, and we look forward to continuing our cooperation with the state as we grow.”

“This is our first major Chinese investment in the Upstate,” said Spartanburg County Councilman David Britt. “It’s another statement to the world that Spartanburg knows not just how to build automobiles, but everything. The great thing about it is that we are really just starting to hit our stride.”
Carter Smith, executive vice president for the Economic Futures Group, said the county has had success recently in attracting interest from “Pacific Rim” companies. He pointed to the recent announcements of Japanese manufacturers Toray and Kobelco, and said he anticipates more companies from that part of the world will follow suit.

“Traditionally, much of our interest has come from Eastern Europe,” Smith said. “Announcements like this continue to strengthen our reputation as a good place for companies to invest.”
