1. Why do telecommunicators ask so many questions?

The telecommunicator's job is to get enough information to adequately categorize, prioritize and locate a call-for-service. While the telecommunicator is asking you questions, he or she is entering information into a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system. Other telecommunicators can see the information as it is entered and send responders. Talking to the telecommunicator does not delay response. The telecommunicator is gathering information that is necessary for the responding units. The telecommunicator is also trained to offer potential life saving instructions while emergency responders are en route to the scene.

2. When should I call 9-1-1?

You should call 9-1-1 for life-threatening emergencies, crimes in progress, and other emergency situations. If you are ever in doubt, call 9-1-1 and let the telecommunicator determine if you have an emergency.

3. When should I call the non-emergency number?

You should call the non emergency number to request information, report lost or stolen property, report a parking violation or other incidents that are not time-sensitive. If you are ever in doubt, call 9-1-1 and allow the telecommunicator to determine if it is an emergency.
